Though I was raised vegetarian and was a mini-animal rights activist from a young age, I've always loved cheese and yogurt, and I justtt didn't see how I could ever give that up!
Somewhere mid-college, I also became a TOTAL gym rat; you know, the kind who only drinks water out of gallon jugs and adds protein powder and egg whites to everything? Yeah, that was me.
During this ab-obsessed phase I threw my vegetarian ways to the wind and started hardcore eating meat, only caring about my protein intake and my gainz. I was a SLAVE to My Fitness Pal and remember crying after an Olive Garden dinner, because I'd gone 15 grams "over" my carbs for the day and hadn't "hit my protein" goals. *eye roll*
It wasn't until a few years later that a light-night Netflix-binge of Forks Over Knives, Cowspiracy, and Vedgucated totally opened my eyes... I dug into every plant-based book and doc, and aside from some leftover non-vegan Halloween candy I finished up, I went plant-based overnight.
The health perks have been awesome, but even moreso? No longer obsessively monitoring for calories or macros, no longer was I thinking of carbs as the devil (which is an awesome feeling when you've been trying to "resist" bread since middle school!) and no longer was I seeing food and dieting as a punishment — but the best part of my day.
