My Top Soy-free Vegan Protein Sources
I like to do things that I once thought were impossible--call it a hobby of mine! So, this week I have tacked a dietary goal I once thought was completely impossible--being a soy-free vegan.
While I know soy is a little bit of a controversial food anyway, I've always loved it and had no issue with it, health-wise. Tofu is BAE, tempeh I JUST recently fell in love with, hard, Tofurkey deli slices are everything (trust story, I Googled the other week if I could buy stock in Tofurkey...), and roasted edamame beans are actually partly crack, I'm pretty sure. However, it's finally become impossible for me to ignore what I am prettyyy sure is an intolerance to soy I seem to have developed over the last couple of months.
With 5 weeks (ahhh!) until my first fitness competition, I'm leaning out like my life depends on it, and have realized lately I am just bloated and icky feeling almost immediately following any meal with soy...meaning like, everything I eat lately. :(
Without further adieu, here is my roundup of totally-vegan, soy-free, meal-plan-approved, what-in-the-actual-heck-does-that-even-leave foods. You might be as surprised as I was how many great options that does actually leave!
1. Ripple Milk: My new favorite sub for soy milk! It's a little pricier, though I will wait patiently for that to drop, as pea protein and milks become more mainstream, but it's higher protein, delicious, and no bloat for me. Worth it.
2. Shakeology: Delicious, a no-brainer....still not sure why every vegan, heck, every human on earth doesn't drink this stuff daily. I am on a vanilla kick right now but also have chocolate, cafe latte, and strawberry bags on top of my fridge. 70 superfoods in one scoop (think maca, spirulina, kale, chia, matcha, chaga mushrooms, goji berries, etc.) This is no new addition but I'm more thankful than ever to have this GF, soy-free magic. 3. Trader Joe's falafel mix: Beans are life! And this falafel blend is just that--a chickpea base, loads of soy-free protein, and SO yummy on top of a salad or in pita with hummus.
4. Dr. Praeger's All American Burger: I just picked these up for the first time this week at Sprouts, and man I am hooked. I'm really hoping I can find them at stores back in Florida, because they're my favorite vegan burger I think I've ever had! And that's saying something. Also HELLO 25 grams of soy-less protein....what!?
5. Munk Pack Vegan Cookie: Another relatively new fan, I am obsessed with these cookies! If you've tried Lenny's and Larry's these are a more nutritious in my opinion, slightly lower calorie, still vegan, still HEAVENLY alternative. I'm just all around a huge fan, and they pack in a TON of vegan protein. I love having half of one as a post-workout snack.
6. Fieldroast Chipotle Sausage: ALL the Fieldroast products are dang delicious in my opinion, I just grabbed these Mexican-inspired chipotle ones at my local Sprouts this week. I slice them into coins, saute them in a pan, and toss them into legit anything from salads, DIY Chipotle bowls with cauliflower rice and black beans and guac, or even in soups. You can't mess these up, even plain for breakfast.
7. Sprouts Vegan Vanilla Protein: Honestly unless you're a fitness competitor or super-athlete, I highly doubt you're in need of the extra protein boost, and maybe not even then. However, if you're needing one more option, this Sprout's brand vanilla vegan protein is life. I LOVE mixing it into oatmeal, which turns a plain bowl of oats into a pudding-like dessert, and adds a punch of pea and rice-based protein.
Let me know how you feel about the oh-so controversial soy! Does it bother you? Not at all? I'm excited to see how this soy-less or at least low-soy experiment works for me, but I'm a huge fan of listening to YOUR body, not jumping on any dietary bandwagons just cause you read about it on a blog--so keep doing you :)
