Planet Protein, Inc: My Review on This Vegan Protein Bar
One of the most common questions I tend to get asked is: "what protein bar do you recommend?"
And until recently, to be honest, I didn't.
Back in my "bro-science" phase as I refer to it, I would scarf down bars all day, caring only about the protein content, and not paying any attention to the laundry list of sketchy additives, sugars, and preservatives I was eating. Sadly, many bars on the market are still loaded with these icky ingredients, masquerading under the label of a "health" food. After realizing all the crap I was eating in bars and changing my ways, I was turned off to protein bars for years.
Even if I found a bar with a clean ingredient list, they were oftentimes so low in protein, if they were vegan, I hardly saw a point in eating a bar with just dates and nuts, for example. I'd rather just eat plain old dates and nuts, ya feel?That's why I've been SO excited lately, to be forced to eat my words, as so many awesome new vegan protein bar options pop up on shelves, so fast I can hardly try them all (just kidding--I manage pretty well! ;) One of my very, very favorites that I wanted to share with you is the Planet Protein, Inc brand vegan protein bar--which I recently tried out in both flavors they're currently offering--peanut butter cup and cherry almond fudge!
They really can't be beat in terms of ingredients, their focus on sustainability, their protein content, and the amazing macros. Not to mention taste. Meaning when I'm on the road or in prep for a bikini competition (AKA my whole life), they're totally the perfect, no-brainer snack to have on hand.
Let's take a bite into each bar and break it all down.
Cherry Almond Fudge
Dense but not overly chewy, subtly sweet, with a just a hint of tart cherry flavor. I love this bar because it tastes like a traditional fruit-nut bar but so much more satisfying and wholesome--zero fake or artificial taste, because it's zero percent fake or artificial!
Sometimes I don't love almond "flavor," but real almonds are delish--and that's all this bad boy contains. Organic dates and cherries plus a few chocolate chips lend it its sweetness, which is super well balanced, AKA not overbearing like so many bars that just taste like candy. (Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes you want a bar that tastes as healthy as it is, you know?)
The texture is definitely on point-not a jaw breaker or super gummy like other bars I've had, and also moist enough that you can eat it in the car without it crumbling apart on you.
Peanut Butter ChocolateI'm the type of girl to go for peanut butter over any fruity flavor, so I was even more excited for this one, which is definitely my favorite!
It just tastes like you're digging into a jar of organic, natural peanut butter, and the quinoa crisp and peanuts give it a great crunch and texture.
I've had lots of bars that have a distinctly artificial, almost bitter aftertaste (even vegan ones) and neither of these have any of that--thanks to their totally natural ingredient lineup and lack of sugar alcohols.
As for the nutrients: Honestly, you can't beat the macros on these things.
The bars are 280-290 calories--on the higher end for sure, meaning it counts a a legitimate snack or breakfast, and with that you'll get only 10-13 grams of fat, 31-34 grams of healthy carbs to keep you full, and a whopping 20 grams of protein in either flavor.
That's about as high a protein content as I've ever seen on any vegan protein product, including drinks or bars. The protein comes 100% from pea protein which is my absolute #1 source for vegan protein. If you try to avoid gluten or soy, like I do, pea protein is a super easy-on-the-stomach and hypoallergenic option. Plus, pea protein has been linked to lowering blood pressure and promoting kidney health. #bonuspoints.
Every ingredient is non-GMO, you won't find any palm oil or sugar alcohols, and everything is certified gluten free and of course, vegan.
I'll certainly be keeping these on hand in the future for those days when I'm leaving the house and need a snack in my bag, for when I'm traveling, and certainly for throughout my prep, since I can knock out such a significant chunk of my daily protein intake with just one bar!
